Ask, Tell and Command

2. Tell
This is the second stage. This is when you TELL the horse what to do by giving a stronger, clearer signal. You should use this after you’ve ASKED your horse and your horse has not responded because he or she was not paying attention or did not want to obey.

3. Command:
If you have gone through the stages of ASK and TELL and your horse still does not obey you will now need to COMMAND him to comply. Your horse must respond to you. A COMMAND is strong firm action or punishment to enforce your request.

A COMMAND might be a sharp kick or strong firm pressure on the reins to make the horse obey.

REWARD your horse as soon as your horse begins to respond to your COMMAND, relax the pressure on your reins or stop kicking. Remember: when your horse behaves correctly REWARD him immediately. A REWARD may be a pat, or an approving word.
